Boris Ignatievich, the head of the Night Watch, explained that such a vortex could not act selectively and might trigger a massive disaster, potentially leveling half of Moscow. Anton, driven by pity, used his amulet to destabilize the vortex, buying time for the Watch to find the girl and the magician who cursed her. He later visited Svetlana's apartment, implanting false memories to pose as a patient with a stomach ulcer, and through sympathetic conversation, learned that her mother's illness and Svetlana's refusal to donate a kidney had triggered the curse. This revelation allowed the Night Watch to identify the source of the curse and ultimately neutralize the threat.

Initiation and Training

After the crisis was resolved, Svetlana was told the truth about the Others, the Twilight, and the Watches. She was taken to the Night Watch's field headquarters and formally initiated. Her training was accelerated far beyond the normal pace; while most Others take years to develop their powers, the Watch's management, particularly Boris Ignatievich and Olga, pushed her through a compressed curriculum. She was taught everyday magic, such as sprucing up clothes, and was rapidly advanced through the grades of magical power. With Boris Ignatievich, Zabulon, and the Inquisitor Maxim present, Svetlana opened the Book of Destiny and prepared to write a new future. However, when Anton, who had gathered immense power from the happiness of ordinary people, confronted her and refused to give her advice, she was forced to make her own choice. Instead of rewriting Egor's destiny, she erased it, leaving his fate blank. She then declared to Gesar, "Light One Gesar, I do not wish to serve in the Watch. I'm sorry, Light One Gesar, but it's not my path. Not my destiny." This act of refusal, rather than the intended act of creation, marked her final break from the Watch's grand plan and her assertion of her own moral agency.

Svetlana's decision to erase rather than rewrite Egor's destiny was a pivotal moment that subverted the long-prepared operation of the Light. It revealed that the entire elaborate scheme, including the manipulation of Anton and the training of Svetlana, was partly a cover for Olga to secretly use the other half of the chalk to rewrite a different destiny.
